A truly great player, team mate and an outstanding person.
After 254 appearances for Wexford Youths Women FC, Edel Kennedy has announced her retirement from football.
We cannot thank Edel enough for all the wonderful memories she has given us over the past thirteen years.
Her football career started later than most. After many years of GAA success at club and county level Edel decided to give soccer a try and began playing with her local club Shillelagh United in Division 2B in the Wexford District League. That was 2010.
Eleven years later Edel would score a Cup Final wonder goal in Tallaght Stadium that will be remembered for years to come, Wexford Youths Women winning the FAI Cup for a record fourth time.
What a journey it has been.
Edel joined Wexford Youths Women for the inaugural season of the Women’s National League in 2011. A midfield powerhouse with a keen eye for goal, she was our top goal scorer in the 2013-14 season.
Edel memorably scored the only goal of the game in the 2015/16 Shield Final against Shelbourne in front of a packed Ferrycarrig Park.
There were setbacks, an ACL injury kept her out of the 2016 season but she was back the following year and continued to play a pivotal part in Wexford Youths Women’s success.
Edel has won four League medals, four FAI Cup medals, two Shield medals and a League Cup medal at Ferrycarrig Park. She has also competed in three UEFA Champions League campaigns for Wexford.
We will never forget her performances, tackles, never say die attitude, incredible goals and lung bursting runs.
Thank you Edel.
