Wexford FC got their first win in emphatic fashion last Friday night, thundering past Athlone Town 3-0. Athlone to their credit had made an excellent start with two wins out of two, but Wexford clearly found their stride themselves.
With Aaron Dobbs promoted to leading the line, he used his aerial prowess to put Wexford a goal up early. Aaron Robinson has looked top quality throughout the opening months of the new-look Wexford FC season, but was unplayable in front of another bumper Ferrycarrig Park. The defence also had a strong evening, with keeper Charlie Heffernan also announcing his arrival at Ferrycarrig Park with a superb clean sheet performance.
Finn Harps are also going through a major period of change. Ollie Horgan, the league’s longest-serving manager and synonymous with Finn Harps for a generation of LOI fans, is out. Dave Rogers is in – and he comes with an impressive CV as the former U21 Nottingham Forest manager.
He has brought a raft of changes to the Finn Harps squad too – new faces Daniel Okwute and Cian Lynch now feature in the attack. A fascinating rivalry could be re-born on Friday too, as 37 year old Keith Cowan has made his return to Finn Park. Cowan had some fantastic battles with Danny Furlong down the years, and both could feature on Friday night.
A big 3 points at stake as always, and a fascinating night ahead for the fans making the long journey to Ballybofey.
