In the realm of extraordinary talents, one young Wexford native shines bright – Úna May Walsh.
The name might ring familiar as she has graced our screens multiple times on the Late Late Toy Show, capturing the hearts of the nation with her enchanting harp performances.
However, Úna May is not only a gifted musician but also an advocate for Irish Sign Language (ISL). Currently pursuing her qualifications in ISL, she is committed to making a difference and breaking barriers. As part of her dedication, she will be lending her skills to Wexford FC, assisting in conveying major announcements through sign language, ensuring inclusion in our communications.
Recently, Úna May, a student of Loreto Wexford, showcased her talent at the International Women’s Day Event held at the Talbot Hotel with Wexford Local Enterprise Office, further establishing her presence as a versatile artist and a role model for aspiring musicians.
Adding another feather to her cap, Úna May has been flown to Lanzarote to perform at their St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, spreading the joy of Irish music beyond our shores.
Moreover, as Wexford FC welcomed Finn Harps, Úna May graced the cover of the matchday programme, symbolising the harmony between sports and arts as she plays her harp on the pitch.
Cian Doyle, Gaeilge Ambassador for Wexford FC, expressed his admiration for Úna May’s dedication, stating, “Táim thar a bheith bródúil as Úna May agus a hobair iontach. Tá sí mar smaoineamh dúinn uile, agus táimid buíoch di as a cuid tacaíochta le Gaeilge agus le síneadh teanga.”
Scott Gaynor, Chief Marketing Officer of Wexford FC, emphasised the importance of promoting our native language, music, and the profound impact of ISL initiatives, especially in a year when Wexford hosts the Fleadh Cheoil. “At Wexford FC, we believe in the power of language to unite communities. Úna May’s work in promoting ISL aligns perfectly with our values of inclusion and diversity. I’m genuinely struck at how mature and impressive this young lady is and we’ve been delighted at the feedback we’ve received for trying to showcase her important work, in a number of areas.”
Úna May shared her passion for Irish, music, and promoting sign language initiatives, stating, “Is cúis áthais dom bheith páirteach i gcláracha teanga, ceoil, agus gníomhaíochtaí comhartha teanga a chur chun cinn – ceisteanna atá díreach i mo chroí. / It’s a pleasure to be involved in promoting language and music- two things very close to my own heart.”
