Wexford FC Women made it three wins on the bounce with a comfortable victory over DLR Waves at Ferrycarrig Park on Saturday night, Ceola Bergin, Ciara Rossiter and Freya De Mange with the goals.
Midfielder Aoibheann Clancy also made her 100th appearance for the club on the night.
Wexford went into the game without captain Kylie Murphy who missed out through an arm injury picked up in last weeks win in Galway. Clancy led the team out in her place.
It was a cautious start from both sides, the first chance falling to the visitors in the 10th minute when Michelle Doonan forced Jayne Merren into a good save at her right hand post. The home team grew into the game and broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when De Mange found the corner of the net after a clever turn in the box. A good spell for the hosts followed with a number of corners in quick succession but the Waves defended them well.
Ceola Bergin came close to doubling the lead before the break with a well struck volley from 25 yards but Eve Badana tipped it wide. Wexford one goal up at the break.
The visitors drew level in the 55th minute, Doonan breaking the offside trap and cooly finishing past Merren. Game on and Wexford responded with Bergin, Rossiter and Ellen Molloy all hitting the target with good efforts but Badana was equal to them and kept her side in the game.
But with twenty minutes remaining, the Slaneysiders would hit the front – Rossiter with a laser like left foot shot into the corner.
A third goal arrived five minutes later, Bergin with another classy finish which gave the Waves keeper no chance.
There were further chances for Wexford in the final quarter, Rianna Jarrett having two close range efforts saved while Molloy and Clancy forced Badana into saves from well struck free kicks.
Three goals would be enough with Wexford’s good form continuing.
Next up – an All-Island Cup Quarter Final against Linfield Women in Belfast on Saturday.
