A frustrating evening at Ferrycarrig Park as Wexford FC Women fell to a 2-0 defeat in their opening game of the 2024 season.
Bohemians good recent record against Wexford continued with goals coming at the start and end of a game played in awful weather throughout.
Abby Tuthill made her competitive debut for Wexford, starting at centre back alongside the returning Della Doherty.
The visitors made the brighter start and took an early lead through Fiona Donnelly who fired in an unstoppable right foot shot from thirty yards in the 8th minute. Wexford took a little while to recover but slowly began to grow into the game.
The slick surface resulted in a lot of turnovers from both sides which made for an entertaining affair despite the inclement weather.
Bohs almost doubled their lead in the 13th minute but Tuthill cleared off the line. Ellen Molloy tested Rachael Kelly with a long range effort minutes later but the keeper saved comfortably.
The best chance of the half for the hosts arrived moments later, Ciara Rossiter sending in a fantastic cross to Ceola Bergin, the teenage striker forcing a better stop from the visiting net minder. Kylie Murphy tried her luck from a way out just before the half time whistle but Wexford would go in a goal down.
Wexford turned it up a notch in the second half and were very unlucky not to go level in the 65th minute when Bergin blasted over from a narrow angle. Rossiter came close five minutes later with a left foot shot that kept rising.
By this stage the Dublin side were under constant pressure but they defended well in numbers. Into the last ten and Wexford had two more great chances, Kelly spilling an Abbie Brophy effort and Emily Corbet having a goal bound effort blocked off the line.
An injury to Rossiter late on meant Wexford would finish with ten having already used up their sub quota.
Aoibhe Brennan would secure the three points for the visitors with another sublime long range effort in the 89th minute.
