A hard earned point for Wexford Youths Women in Dublin last night, Ellen Molloy and Kylie Murphy on the scoresheet against Bohs.
It was Molloy’s first senior start in over a year, the teenage star getting stronger and stronger each week after returning from an ACL injury.
Wexford started the game brightly and were in front after seven minutes, Molloy firing a right foot shot past Kelly after the Bohs keeper initial save from Ciara Rossiter. The setback seemed to spur the home side on though and Nicole Nix had to tip a powerful Niamh Prior effort over the bar to keep the Youths lead intact. Bohs had another good opportunity in the 21st minute but O’Hara sliced her shot wide of the target.
Wexford tried to reassert some dominance in the game and came close to doubling their lead in the 26th minute when Emily Corbet found Kylie Murphy at the back post but her glancing header went wide.
The hosts however drew level in the 32nd minute after a long range strike from Mia Dodd found the net, the 1-1 half time scoreline a fair reflection on the game.
Bohs continued to play some good football after the break and took the lead in the 61st minute, another fine goal this time Katie Malone with the right foot finish past Nix.
Plenty of drama in the final quarter, starting with Rachael Kelly’s dismissal in the 71st minute, the Bohs keeper pulling Abbie Brophy down in the box and denying her a goal scoring opportunity. Molloy’s spot kick would be saved however, replacement keeper Medbh Ryan making a great stop low to her right.
Wexford piled the pressure on but the ten players of Bohs defended well in numbers and it started to look like they were about to get their second win of the year over the Youths. Then in the 90th minute another penalty was awarded to Wexford, the referee spotting a hand ball as Molloy attempted a through ball to an unmarked Corbet.
This time it was Murphy who stepped up to take the pen, making no mistake to level the game at 2-2.
There was still time for a winner and Wexford almost found it in the 93rd minute when Corbet headed narrowly over.
A draw it finished, Wexford remaining in sixth place with a game to spare on the sides above them.
