Report: Cork City 2-0 Wexford
Roared on by great travelling supporter, Wexford looked to keep in the playoff race with a result against the league leaders in Cork.
Going into the match, Wexford were without Max Murphy who was serving a suspension following last week’s defeat against Athlone. Robbie McCourt was also unavailable for the tie, with Ryan Butler and Liam Doyle starting in place of the duo.
Early pressure by the away side would force a corner for Wexford in the third minute, with a well-struck cross from Jamie Wynn forcing a solid save from Cork shotstopper Conor Brann.
A low-driven effort by Mikie Rowe ten minutes later would force another solid save from Brann, with the away side looking the more threatening with a quarter of an hour gone.
Five minutes later, Ruairi Keating would force Paul Martin into action for the first time in the match, with the Cork forward’s effort pushed away by the Wexford keeper.
Valiant defending from Wexford would continue to frustrate the Rebel Army, with a number of corners and set pieces amounting to nothing for City.
With a half hour gone, Jake Doyle would be put through on goal but would have his effort saved by Brann.
Five minutes later, Former Ireland international Sean Maguire would have a guided header well saved by Paul Martin, his second save of the game.
Martin would make yet another save from a Cork corner on the stroke of halftime, ensuring that the tie would remain level going into the break.
Three minutes into the second half, Cork would take the lead.
Seventeen-year-old Cillian Murphy would poke home from close distance following a deflected Hans Mpongo cross.
After sustained pressure from Wexford, City would double their advantage in the 72nd minute, with Seani Maguire heading home for his eleventh goal of the season following a well taken corner.
Stephen Elliott would call on the bench with a quarter hour remaining, bringing on Zayd Abada as well as Zak O’Sullivan.
Wexford would force Conor Brann into his fourth save of the night in the 80th minute, following a deflected cross.
Jake Doyle’s 90th minute effort from range would be Wexford’s last effort of the evening.
Attention now turns towards an away trip to Limerick, a week from today, as Wexford face Treaty United.
