MATCH PREVIEW: YOUTHS WOMEN VS SLIGO ROVERS

3 games to go & a 4-horse race

Our penultimate home game of the 2022 WNL awaits this Saturday, as the Youths face an out of form Sligo Rovers side.

Before the sensational international break for the Irish Women’s Team, the Youths suffered a 2-1 defeat away to Athlone. A late goal from Gillian Keenan kept Athlone’s chances of winning the WNL still alive.

Athlone’s win ended a 10 game unbeaten streak for Wexford Youths, and a 7 game win streak. In fact, our previous loss beforehand was in our last meeting with Sligo Rovers in June. Emma Doherty scored midway through the second half in a surprising 1-0 scoreline.

At the time, Sligo had kept 3 consecutive clean sheets – Cork and Treaty being the other previous teams. However, they have failed to keep a clean sheet since that game.

Last time out at Ferrycarrig though, Wexford Youths defeated Sligo 2-0 in April, with Rebecca Watkins and Ciara Rossiter scoring the goals either side of half time.

Coincidentally, since their last meeting in June, which was 12 games ago, Wexford Youths have lost just twice, while Sligo have only won twice.

Sligo are now winless in their last 6 games. Similar to last time, they did draw against Treaty in the preceding game to the Youths. Before the break they struck late to make it 1-1 vs Treaty, while in June it was 0-0.

If one team in the division is to cause a title upset though, it’s Sligo Rovers. From their 6 wins this season, 2 have been against the top two teams – Youths and Shels (top 3 if you include their awarded win over Peamount on the first day of the season).

All eyes will be on the other 3 title contenders this weekend:

DLR Waves host Shels. DLR Waves are unbeaten in their last 6 home games and have only lost twice at home this season, with just 7 goals conceded. Shels have the best away record in the last 8 games, winning 6. All 5 of DLR Waves home draws have come in the last 8 games.

Peamount travel to Cork. Peas have scored 28 goals against Cork in their last 4 games.

Treaty host Athlone. Athlone have never lost to Treaty, and are unbeaten in their last 5 away games.

Kick-off is 16:30 at Ferrycarrig Park is Saturday 15th October 2022.

If you can’t make it down, this game will also be televised on TG4.
