Match Preview: Wexford FC vs Finn Harps

After twice falling foul of the weather, Wexford finally got back to action last weekend away to UCD at the Belfield Bowl. After two weeks to completely clear their heads after a disappointing start away to Athlone, the squad reacted well to put in a dominant performance and come away with the three points. Aaron Dobbs did return up top, and new signing Sean McHale was brought straight in at centre back.

Wexford were in charge from the get-go, having the clear physical edge over UCD as well as looking better in possession. After some good chances it was Kian Corbally who broke the deadlock late in the first half, making the Students pay for some sloppy play around the edge of their own box.

McHale capped off a hugely impressive first LOI start with a goal on his debut, breaking free of his marker from a corner and powering the header beyond the UCD keeper. The win moves Wexford to 8th place with two games in hand on most of the sides ahead of them.

Finn Harps have had an extremely impressive start to 2024 – with new manager Darren Murphy getting a full pre-season with his side as well as some new signings, they have picked up 7 points from their opening 4 games along with a very competitive game against favourites Cork City. In particular, former Wexford FC player Success Edogun is flourishing with the Donegal side, with three goals in his four appearances so far. Special note also goes to another new arrival in David Cawley, the highly experienced former Sligo Rovers and Galway Utd midfielder was the other high profile arrival at Harps in the off-season.

This game will certainly be a good barometer for both Wexford and Harps fans to see how their sides will fare for the rest of the season.

Elsewhere, the impressive new club shop which opened it’s doors at last week’s women’s game against Bohemians will finally get it’s men’s match debut Friday night. A super range of merchandise is available now at the ground, and a special congratulations to Eileen and Aidan at the club for their hard work getting it open!
