This Friday, Wexford FC will be facing high-flying Athlone Town AFC at Ferrycarrig Park, with the boys hoping to secure their first points of the 2023 League of Ireland First Division Campaign.
Last week’s 2-1 defeat to Cobh Ramblers at St Colman’s Park will have been a tough pill to swallow for Keddy’s men, but Wexford players and fans alike may find some solace in the fact that this Friday’s opposition, Athlone Town, is a team which Wexford have a good recent track record against. In the 2022 First Division campaign, Wexford were the victor in all but one of the sides’ meetings and were undoubtedly the better team over the course of the season, finishing 2 positions and 14 points ahead of their Westmeath-based opposition.
It should be noted, though, that Athlone have shown themselves to be a far stronger side this season than they were last year. This can be seen from the results which The Town secured in their opening two games of this First Division campaign, 3-1 victories over both Longford and the freshly-relegated Finn Harps,. As a result of these great results, Athlone find themselves at the top of the First Division table, a position which is a far-cry from the 8th placed finish which they achieved in last year’s campaign.
In conclusion, although Athlone have had a much better start to the season than we have, our good recent history against Athlone, and the great support which the boys have been shown this season, particularly at Ferrycarrig, indicate that Wexford might well be the team to come away from the fixture with the all-important three points.
