Match Preview: Galway United v Wexford Youths Women FC

The new season finally kicks off for Wexford Youths Women FC this weekend, Stephen Quinn’s side with a tough opening fixture away to Galway United.

The rebranded SSE Airtricity LOI Women’s Premier Division will have a shortened season this year due to the Women’s World Cup in the summer, 20 League fixtures in total. Every team will be looking for a fast start with little room for slip ups.

Wexford fans will be excited to see their new look team in action, especially after Youths legend Rianna Jarrett made a sensational return to her hometown club.

2022 WNL Player of the Year Emily Corbet was another huge coup for Wexford in the off season, the young striker scoring twenty three goals in last years campaign.

Exciting new wingers Abbie Brophy and Shauna Carroll strengthen the Wexford attack further while Louise Corrigan brings a wealth of experience and quality at the back.

In team news, Lauren Dwyer is an injury doubt for Saturdays trip to Galway while Ellen Molloy and Della Doherty will be unavailable as they recover from long term injuries picked up in the title run in last year.

Ceola Bergin and Grace Fitzpatrick-Ryan returned from the Ireland U17 training camp in Spain during the week and are available for selection.

Hosts Galway United have entered a team into the Women’s Premier Division for the first time, new manager Phil Trill bringing back the majority of the Galway WFC team from last year. This week they announced Lynsey McKey as their club captain, the prolific striker one of the players to watch out for at Eamonn Deacy Park.

Kick off in Galway is at 2pm on Saturday, 4th March.
