Wexford FC face title-bound Cork City this Friday in their penultimate away game of the season. 9 points is a must for Wexford in their remaining 3 games to still be in with a chance of the promotion spots.
Wexford face a Cork side who could have been crowned champions at this point had they won against Galway two weeks ago in their last game. Now, they find themselves as one of only two sides winless in their last 3 home games, along with bottom place Cobh. Cork have just one home win in their last 5.
Based on this surprising stat, considering they have the second-best home form this season, now would be a good opportunity for Wexford to capitalise on this poor run of form. It is worth noting however that they have only lost once in their last 8 home games – the least of any team. Yet, 4 of their 5 home draws this season have come in the last 8 games.
Wexford ended their 6 game winless streak last week with a brilliant display at home against Bray Wanderers. Superb finishes from Conor Davis, Aaron Dobbs, Jack Doherty, and Len O’Sullivan marked a 4-2 win – a repeat of the final game of last season.
Wexford have put in impressive displays against Cork this season. They managed to grab a point off them in May at Turner’s Cross – a second half equaliser from Conor Davis made it 1-1. Both games at Ferrycarrig this season narrowly went Cork’s way, with both finishing 0-1.
A win for Cork would all but certainly secure them the title, with goal difference being the only mathematical variant. Anything but a win for Galway against Athlone on the same day would also secure them the title, if Cork were to win.
Eyes will be on Waterford vs Treaty this Friday also. A win for Treaty would secure them 5th place, and 6th place for Wexford.
Waterford have the best home form in the last 8 games, scoring the most amount of goals.
