Wexford FC Women were back in action for the first pre-season game of the year on Saturday against Shelbourne FC in what turned out to be a very entertaining game.
After the game Manager Hugh Strong said that he was very pleased with the performance in general and it enabled players to get much needed minutes into the legs:
“You can train all you want but nothing beats playing games, especially against top opponents.
Thanks to Eoin and his crew for travelling and best of luck to them for the upcoming season.”
“Our preparation has gone well so far, pre-season is going really well. Girls are working really hard and there’s a great buzz within the group.
The age profile of the crew is very young – the pathway in the club from underage to first team is clearly there for all to be seen. I think we have about 13/14 players that have played Academy football for the club, and we had 8 or 9 that played yesterday that are actually still eligible to play U19.
Add to the group the very experienced 6 or 7 players that have won everything over the years who are absolutely crucial to the makeup of the squad.”
“We have added an extra night of training this season because we want to maximise the potential as much as possible within the squad.”
“We are still looking to add to the squad but only if the right player becomes available.
As a club Wexford FC have been brilliant supporting players with undergraduate, postgraduate and professional qualifications etc giving players all the education supports available, which is vital to young players trying to get themselves through education while playing football at the highest level in the country.”
“Our preparation continues with further pre-season games each week up until the season start on the 9th of March and you never know we may have a new signing by then.”
