The new EA Sports LOI Academy season kicked off at the weekend with both of our girls teams in action.
Our U17s were first up on Saturday with an away trip to take on Bray Wanderers. In all eight players made their League of Ireland debuts on the day, congratulations to them all.
The girls went in ahead at the break, an unfortunate own goal the difference between the sides after a close competitive first half of action. A super finish from Lily-Anne O’Meara doubled the girls lead shortly after the break and Eimear Roche added a third soon after. Meah Cuddihy (pictured below) scored the goal of the day with a thunderous right foot shot.
Lily-Anne found the net again before Ruby Murdiff ended the scoring, finding the net with a long range shot on her LOI debut. A fine performance from the girls with plenty of great football on show.
The weekends Academy action wrapped up on Sunday when our U19s opened their season with a super comeback win over Treaty United at Ferrycarrig.
The girls played some excellent attacking football in the first half but were unlucky to be 1-0 behind at the break.
A quick restart resulted in a well deserved equaliser, Leah McGrath (pictured with her team mates at the top of the page) scoring on her WU19 debut with a superb right foot shot. Wexford kept the pressure on and went ahead through a Jess Lawler close range finish.
United were level however as we went into the final 15 minutes through a super free kick but the girls finished the game strong and found the winner in the 83rd minute, Leah scoring her second of the day.
