An excellent run of results in May ended in a fifth victory in a row for Wexford FC Women who had a comfortable 2-0 home win over Cork City at the weekend, Della Doherty and Ciara Rossiter scoring the goals.
After booking a spot in the All-Island Cup Semi-Finals last week Wexford returned their focus to the League and put in one of their best performances of the season, the result never in doubt.
A dominant first half performance went unrewarded however, the sides going in scoreless at the break. Aoibheann Clancy had come the closest to breaking the deadlock when her free kick came back off the City post in the 18th minute. Ceola Bergin also tested the keeper, hitting the target three times but Clodagh Fitzgerald kept the visitors in the game. She was finally beaten in the 28th minute when Ellen Molloy headed in but the flag went up for an offside call.
The opening goal arrived in the 52nd minute, Della Doherty powering a header past the keeper after a super Clancy corner. One turned to two minutes later when Wexford capitalised on a misplaced pass – Bergin’s shot parried but Ciara Rossiter was on hand to tap in the rebound for her sixth goal of the season.
Wexford kept the attacks going, Molloy again unlucky to see her right foot shot hit the woodwork in the 62nd minute. Five minutes later a busy Fitzgerald saved a left foot effort from Molloy. Rossiter should have had a second goal in the 70th but stabbed her effort wide with the keeper beaten.
City finally had an effort on goal in the 85th minute but Jayne Merren comfortably saved.
Wexford head to Dublin next week and will face a much sterner test against Shelbourne at Tolka Park.
