Scott Gaynor, Chief Marketing Officer at Wexford FC, emphasises the significance of climate action for football clubs, stating, “In an era where climate change poses unprecedented challenges, football clubs have a responsibility to lead by example in environmental sustainability. Ciara’s appointment as Sustainability Officer signifies our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and promoting eco-friendly practices within our club and community.”

Ciara O’Muiri shares her vision for her role, stating, “I am honoured to join Wexford FC as the Sustainability Officer and am eager to enhance the club’s efforts in environmental responsibility. Through collaboration with stakeholders and implementation of innovative sustainability initiatives, I aim to integrate sustainable practices into every aspect of the club’s operations, from matchdays to community outreach programmes.”

Wexford FC looks forward to the positive impact Ciara O’Muiri will undoubtedly have in advancing the club’s sustainability agenda and contributing to a greener, more sustainable future for football and the community.

Speaking in November at the SSE Airtricity League Sustainability Initiative Launch, League of Ireland Director Mark Scanlon said:

“We’ve seen how football can play a huge role in inspiring positive change across our communities and nowhere is that change needed more today than in combatting climate change and building more environmentally sustainable communities.

“Building on our long-standing partnership with SSE Airtricity, this initiative offers our clubs a unique opportunity to avail of world class supports from people who know what it takes to make positive environmental changes in football. We’re excited by the responses from many of our clubs and look forward to developing the initiative over the coming season.”

The club will be assisted by GreenCode, a global green accreditation scheme. GreenCode recognises that sustainability is a journey, with the focus on creating a starting place for clubs and providing a clear road map towards greater sustainability year after year. The GreenCode standards cover areas such as water, waste, energy, procurement and biodiversity. The process begins with a simple assessment before moving towards bespoke plans and advice on helping clubs progress.

• Initiative will see every club across the leagues given access to internationally recognised sustainability accreditation experts ‘GreenCode’
• It marks the first green initiative of this scale ever launched in Ireland and builds on the work undertaken by SSE Airtricity with clubs across the divisions
• Shared ambition of the leagues and SSE Airtricity is to help build one of the most environmentally sustainable football leagues in the world
