A big League Tier One win for our U17 girls on Friday night, Leah McGrath scoring a brace in a well deserved 2-0 win over Waterford at the SETU Arena.
A fast and physical first half ended scoreless with chances hard to come by. A more open second half was end to end with great chances for either side. Wexford broke the deadlock in the 65th minute through a penalty, Ciara Breslin brought down in the box. Leah cooly slotted the spot kick past the keeper for her 15th goal in her debut LOI season.
The hosts had a great opportunity with a penalty of their own ten minutes later but the kick was blasted over. Leah secured the three points with a goal in the 92nd minute – the fourteen year old striker with a clinical left foot finish for her 16th goal in 2023.
Wexford remain in third spot in the League with four rounds of games to come.
Another big game for the U17 girls coming up on Saturday when they take on Athlone Town in the EA Sports Cup Semi-Final. Kick off at Athlone Town Stadium is at 7pm.
Unfortunately our U19s eagerly anticipated top of the table clash with Shamrock Rovers had to be abandoned on Sunday, the torrential rain making it unsafe to continue. The game was officially called off at half-time, the game 0-0 at the time. A new date for the fixture will be announced soon.
The U19s travel to Cork this coming Sunday for their EA Sports Cup Semi-Final. Kick off at Bishopstown Stadium is set for 2pm.
