Another busy weekend of action for Wexford Youths Women’s underage teams with our U17 and U19 girls facing tough games on the road.
Yesterday our U19s had a super 7-4 win in Cork, the three points securing their second place spot in the League Tier One table and keeping the pressure on current leaders Shamrock Rovers.
The Youths started the game brilliantly and were three goals up inside 25 minutes with goals from Áine Walsh, Michaela Lawrence and Ceola Bergin. They continued to put the pressure on the home team and added two more before the break, Bergin getting her second of the day and Mia Lenihan scoring the fifth for the Youths. City reduced the deficit just before the half time whistle through Kayleigh Still.
The goal fest continued in the second half, City making a comeback with goals from Still, Grace Flanagan and Kelsey Cooper. The Youths reasserted their dominance however and secured a big win with Bergin scoring her third goal of the day and Lawrence netting her second.
Top of the table clash next week for our U19s who take on Shamrock Rovers in a huge game at Ferrycarrig with just three games remaining in the league.
On Saturday our U17 team faced a tough task as they travelled to the midlands to take on an Athlone Town side bang in form. The hosts put six unanswered goals past Galway the week before and were off to the perfect start with a goal inside two minutes at Athlone Town Stadium. Irish underage international Millie Daly doubled their lead midway through the first half.
Our girls battled to get back into the game and started the second half on the front foot. Athlone however secured the three points with two quick fire goals in the 54th and 61st minutes. The Youths got the goal their second half endeavour deserved in the 69th minute, Leah McGrath scoring her 16th goal of the season, the game ending on a 4-1 scoreline in favour of the home team.
The girls remain in third place in the Tier One table and are back on the road again next week with a game against Waterford at the SETU Arena on Saturday evening.
