Match Preview: Wexford FC vs Longford Town

Wexford FC will kick-off their home season this Friday night after a misfiring start up at Athlone Town last week.

Athlone were comfortable 3-0 winners last week, but speaking to the media team this week Ethan Boyle was clear that the squad would work hard to put things right:

“We didn’t get off to a good start last week and we’ll look to set things straight with our first home league game of the season against Longford Town. They also lost out in their opening night encounter with Finn Harps. Longford have always been a tough ask for many teams and will have the utmost of respect from us going into it.”

Like Wexford, Longford Town appointed a new manager last season who has successfully carried the majority of his squad into the new season.

New man Stephen Henderson is a familiar face around the league for a good number of years now, and has certainly done some shrewd business in the off-season for Longford Town.

While losing star strikers Cristian Magerusan and Beineon O’Brien Whitmarsh was certainly a knock, they will still be going into the 2024 season with plenty of options up front.  Coming in is experienced striker Chris Lyons, and another one to watch may well be the returning young forward Francis Campbell.

Longford have been forced to refresh their backline also after the loss of Derek Daly, Lewis Temple and James Doona – but Town fans will be delighted with the return of Karl Chambers who departed Wexford during the off-season.  Three other ex-Wexford men lining out tonight in the red and black are Conor Crowley, Dean George and Jordon Tallon, all well remembered here for hard working performances in recent years.

Wexford will be without Cian O’Malley again who has missed most of pre-season through injury, and Aaron Dobbs missed out on the starting XI last week due to a knock and could be a doubt for Friday.
