A dominant Wexford FC performance at Stradbrook last night with goals from Kyle Robinson and Jack Doherty in each half securing a richly deserved win over Cabinteely. In truth the scoreline flattered the hosts as Ian Ryan's team outrun and outgunned Pat Devlin's side from start to finish despite finishing with ten men, Paul Fox sent off after a second booking in the 74th minute.

There was just one change from last weeks unfortunate defeat to Bray, Lorcan Fitzgerald starting for the first time with Karl Fitzsimons dropping to the bench. The hugely experienced defender was instrumental in the win, settling immediately into a back three with the equally impressive Luke Turner and James Carroll with Paul Cleary moving out to right wing back. Even if Stadbrook was filled to capacity fans would still have no problems hearing Fitzgeralds commands and encouragement to his fellow teammates. In midfield Conor Crowley, Karl Manahan and Jack Connolly had their best games of the season, as did the other former Cabo man in Wexford colours, Paul Fox. Upfront Jack Doherty and Kyle Robinson were constant threats throughout a largely one sided affair.

Wexford were in front after five minutes, Kyle Robinson heading powerfully past Harry Halwax, Paul Fox with the pin point cross from the left wing. Ryan's team didn't sit back after that and continued to pepper the home goal with shot after shot, Conor Crowley, Robinson and Lorcan Fitzgerald (who struck the post with a teasing left foot free kick delivery) all coming close to adding to the early lead with efforts on target inside the opening half hour. Cabinteely were very lucky to escape a goalmouth scramble in the 32nd minute, Luke Turner's header first coming off the post with Robinson's follow up shot cleared desperately off the line. Jimmy Corcoran had one of his quieter nights in a Wexford shirt, much of that owing to the excellent defending from the players in front of him.

On the restart Wexford continued to hunt for the second goal, Jack Doherty firing a right foot shot wide in the 50th minute and then missing narrowly with his left in the 54th. Moments later Ian Ryan's team had a huge chance to double their advantage on a lightning fast counter attack, five players racing at one Cabo defender but Kyle Robinson had a heavy touch at the last second and the opportunity was gone. Wexford fans might have started to wonder at this point if these missed chances were going to come back to haunt their team but the home side still struggled to create much despite having more possession than they had in the first half. Kevin Knight came close to stealing an equaliser for Cabinteely on the hour mark, his looping header coming back off the post. A minute later down the other end Jack Connolly powered a header wide of the near post from a Jack Doherty corner. The second goal would finally come however in the 64th minute, Doherty heading home from close range.

Wexford managed the final fifteen minutes with ten men comfortably, Corcoran only having to make one real save of note from a Niall Barnes right foot shot. All in all a hugely impressive team performance on the night and the perfect way to start the second round of games ahead of this weeks mid season break.
