ūüďł Tough one to take tonight. But heads up, back in action in seven days time at home to Bray. https://t.co/fzHLG5y1JU

An extremely harsh straight red card was brandished to Jimmy Corcoran seconds after kick off in this evenings defeat to UCD at Ferrycarrig Park, the Wexford goalkeeper judged to have handled outside his penalty area. The shocking decision made what was already a tough task against the unbeaten in form Dublin side even more difficult. The remarkable officiating didn't stop there either, replacement goalkeeper Sean Martin was issued a harsh yellow card after conceding a penalty in the 35th minute and Wexford were down to nine players after the young shotstopper received a second yellow for a similar foul in the 53rd minute (midfielder Karl Fitzsimons having to take over goalkeeping duties). Colm Whelan dispatched both penalties and scored another from play for his hat-trick in UCDs 6-0 win.

There was just one change for Wexford going into the game, Harry Groome for Success Edogun who had started last week in Athlone. The game was still in its first minute when Corcoran received his marching orders having gathered a harmless punt forward on the edge of his box, the referee shocking everyone in Ferrycarrig after reaching for his red card. Replays would later show how farcical the decision was. To make matters worse, Adam Lennon tapped in a rebound from the resulting free kick to make it 1-0. The ten men of Wexford should have been level in the 8th minute when Paul Fox was put through on goal but his left foot shot was well saved by Lorcan Healy. The visitors had a number of long range efforts after that with Liam Kerrigan, Sean Brennan and Colm Whelan all missing the target. Martin (making his League of Ireland senior debut) made two good saves to deny Brennan and Kerrigan to keep the home side in the game as the half hour mark approached. Jack Doherty had a great opportunity to level the game in the 32nd minute but he couldn't get enough height on his chip over the advancing Healy. Three minutes later and UCDs lead was doubled, Colm Whelan converting a spot kick. The penalty award was a fair decision (Martin taking down Whelan after making a fine stop beforehand) but the yellow card issued to the young keeper wasn't. The visitors would add two more goals before the half ended, Mark Dignam heading in from close range and Liam Kerrigan finding the back of the net with a powerful right foot shot.

Martin received his second yellow eight minutes into the second half, tripping Whelan who had slipped past him for another penalty and Wexford were down to nine. Karl Fitzsimons popped the keepers top on but was unable to stop the spot kick from Whelan that put UCD 5-0 up. The striker had his hat trick in the 67th minute, a fine right foot finish from the edge of the box to make it six. Daniel Dobbin (making his Wexford debut), Kyle Robinson, Kevin McEvoy and Charlie Smith all came on for Wexford as the half went on and although UCD kept firing on sight they were unable to add to their scoreline.

Wexford head to Turners Cross next week to take on Cork City.
