Opening day defeat for Wexford FC at Ferrycarrig Park last night with a debut goal for Luke Turner but Cabinteely hung on for a narrow win to take all three points back to the capital. There were five debuts in all as Paul Fox, Harry Groome, Kyle Robinson and Alex O'Hanlon joined Turner in the starting eleven. Dan Tobin, Anto Dolan and Cameron Power were all missing from the squad through injury while Jack Doherty was on the bench having had little pre-season match time, just recovering from an injury himself.

The visitors took the lead in the tenth minute and it was no surprise to see it coming from a set piece. Cabinteely had already come close just minutes earlier from a corner and Brian O'Sullivan would have been very disappointed to see his side not heed the warning as they left an unmarked Kevin Knight to head in from close range. Wexford recovered well from the early set back and were unfortunate to see three efforts on goal blocked in the 15th minute, Conor Crowley with the final volley that was too high. Paul Fox looked especially lively for the home team early on, the winger beat two players down the right but his pullback cross was cleared away in the 24th minute. Pat Devlin's charges continued to look dangerous from set pieces as Knight headed narrowly wide on the half hour. The home team finished the half well though, Robinson fired a left foot effort that missed the target in the 40th minute and then Paul Cleary rose highest in the box to head an O'Hanlon free kick just wide of the left hand post before the half time whistle.

Kevin Knight was unfortunate to see his header come back off the crossbar on the restart but Cabinteely managed to eventually double their lead in the 52nd minute, Dean Casey with a cracking free kick that gave Tom Murphy no chance. Seven minutes later and Wexford had a goal back, Luke Turner nodding in from close range after Cabinteely failed to clear a corner. Game on. The Slaneysiders looked the most likely from that point on, Fox flashing a fierce left foot shot across goal in the 66th minute and again coming close to finding the equaliser moments later after getting on the end of a Groome cross. The young attacking midfielder was unlucky himself with his own effort in the 82nd minute, inches away with a thunderous right foot volley. One final chance fell to Success Edogun (who replaced Robinson) in stoppage time but unfortunately his right foot effort was saved by Hayden.
