Wexford Youths climbed to the top of the Women's National League after an excellent win over a very good Galway side at Ferrycarrig Park this afternoon. Lynn Marie Grant, Sinead Taylor, Ellen Molloy and Aisling Frawley all scored cracking goals as Tom Elmes side overcame a shaky start to take the three points against the previously unbeaten side from the west. There were two changes to the Youths side that narrowly beat Athlone seven days ago, Sinead Taylor and Lynn Marie Grant both starting, Lauren Dwyer and Orlaith Conlon on the bench.

The vistors were without exciting young striker Rachel Kearns (injured) but were still the better side for large parts of the opening 45, Wexford unable to get their passing game going. Sinead Donovan, Aoife Thompson and Lynsey McKey all had good attempts on goal in the opening twenty minutes, the best been McKey's right foot drive that forced a good save from Ciamh Gray at her left hand post. Their good start got a major setback in the 18th minute however, experienced defender Keara Cormican forced off after suffering a painful ankle injury. They still looked the more likely side to open the scoring, Donovan sliced over with an ambitious volley before Youths got a break that they didn't really deserve but desperately needed. It came in the 38th minute, Ciara Rossiter lofting a left foot free kick from just inside the Galway half and getting enough distance on it to force the high Galway line back to their goal, the unfortunate Shauna Fox heading into her own net after mistakenly thinking there was a Youths attacker behind her. The game was turned on its head again minutes later when the Wexford lead was doubled, this time the goal coming from a move of real quality as Wexford caught the opposition with a quick ruthless counter attack, Lynn Marie Grant with a cool right foot finish to the back of the net for a 2-0 half time lead.

Youths were determined to make the most of their good fortune and were much better with possession in the second half. They added a third goal in the 57th minute, another top class finish, this time from Sinead Taylor who guided Aisling Frawley's pin point cross to the back of the net. Three minutes later and it was four nil after another goal of the season contender from Ellen Molloy, the sixteen year old with a little Zidane pirouette to beat her marker before firing an unstoppable left foot shot into the corner from thirty yards. The visitors day got even worse after that, Therese Kinnevey getting her second booking of the game after a clumsy tackle on Molloy on the edge of the box. Aisling Frawley added a fifth goal for the home side in the 67th minute, a tidy right foot finish after getting on the end of a Rossiter free kick. The final twenty minutes saw a bunch of substitutions, Elmes bringing on Kim Flood, Maeve Williams, Kira Bates Crosbie, Fiona Ryan and Vanessa Ogbonna for some valuable gametime, the ten players from Galway battling well and ensuring nothing more was added to the scoreboard.

Wexford head to Turners Cross in seven days time, Cork City the opponents.
