ūüďł Tough one to take tonight. But heads up, back in action in seven days time at home to Bray. https://t.co/fzHLG5y1JU

Hard fought win for Wexford Youths Women over Athlone Town at Ferrycarrig Park this evening, a Kylie Murphy penalty in the 80th minute the difference between the sides, the visitors finishing up with just nine players on the pitch with two dismissals in the second half. The win moves Youths up to second place two points behind leaders Peamount United but with an extra game played.

There were two changes from last weeks emphatic win in Limerick, Aisling Frawley and Ciamh Gray returning to the starting line up in place of Sinead Taylor and Maeve Williams. The two sides have only met once before, another single goal victory for Tom Elmes side in Athlone last season, that game another tight affair. A very quiet opening meant few chances for either side, Kylie Murphy's volley over the bar and an Edel Kennedy long range shot the only efforts at goal in the opening half hour of play. Wexford's attacks mainly came down the left wing through Ciara Rossiter but the away team defended well and crowded out the marauding full back at every opportunity. The home team were often guilty of rushing passes in the opening 45, the ball harmlessly going over the end line on too many occasions. The best chance of the half fell to Kennedy in the 35th minute but she fired over from close range after a lovely chested pass from Murphy in the box. Athlone had their moments too, Emily Corbet had a fierce right foot shot blocked by Nicola Sinnott while Leah Brady blasted wide in the 37th minute after Youths failed to clear a corner. There was an enforced change for Wexford shortly after, Orlaith Conlon having to come off with a head injury, Kim Flood taking her place.

As expected there was more urgency from the home team in the second half, Lauren Dwyer, Ellen Molloy and Aisling Frawley all had efforts saved by Ronayne before the visitors were reduced to ten shortly after the hour mark, Muireann Deavaney sent off having received a second yellow. As tends to happen, the dismissal re-energised the ten players remaining and Athlone dug in for the rest of the match, battling every ball and frustrating their opponents with time wasting. Rossiter went close for the home team after taking advantage of a quick short corner in the 68th minute but her powerful left foot drive went over. Elmes brought on Lynn Marie Grant and Sinead Taylor (for Lynn Craven and Edel Kennedy) but Youths still couldn't find a breakthrough and it began to look like a 0-0 was on the cards. But then, in the 80th minute a tired looking tackle brought Kylie Murphy down in the box and a penalty was awarded. Youths captain stepped up and calmly tucked it away, her third goal of the season (and her second from the spot). There was still time for more drama, Fiona Owens getting a red card in the 83rd minute after bringing Ellen Molloy down, a harsh decision although the young attacking midfielder was about to have a straight run through on goal.

Youths managed the final few minutes without incident, a second win of the season and first clean sheet. Galway WFC are next up in seven days time at Ferrycarrig.
