Wexford Youths Women advanced to the semi finals of the FAI Women's Senior Cup after a thrilling 3-2 win over Galway WFC at Eamonn Deacy Park last night. There's nothing quite like a Cup game under the lights and both sides must be applauded for a hugely entertaining contest. Tom Elmes made two changes to the starting XI that lost to Cork in the League at Ferrycarrig Park seven days ago, Ciara Rossiter and Vanessa Ogbonna replacing Aisling Frawley and Lauren Kelly. In the end the changes had a huge bearing on the result with both Rossiter and Ogbonna on the scoresheet while Kelly and Frawley combined for the winning goal after coming on in the second half.

The home side took the lead in the 19th minute after a bright opening, Méabh De Búrca heading in at the back post from a corner. Although chances were hard to come by for both sides the first half had turned into a fascinating game with battles all over the pitch and play had to stop on numerous occasions as the physicality of the game began to take its toll on the players. As the half wore on Youths began to have more joy and started to create more openings, Ogbonna and Ellen Molloy both firing over as the break approached. Then two quick fire goals from Youths turned the game on its head. In the 44th minute Rossiter found the back of the net after a quickly taken short corner with a stunning left foot strike to level the game. A minute later and the visitors had the lead, Ogbonna with a clinical right foot finish after latching onto a ball over the top. 2-1 to Wexford at the break.

The second half continued on in similar fashion, Wexford looking to get a bit of breathing space with a third but Galway fighting hard to avenge last years Cup semi final defeat to the side from the South East. The home team found their equaliser after a good spell of pressure in the 65th minute, Jaime Turrentine finding the top corner with a fantastic left foot strike from distance. Galway almost grabbed the lead again in the 70th minute Aoife Thompson finding her goal bound effort saved superbly by Ciamh Gray.

Elmes made his two changes (Orlaith Conlon and Aoibheann Clancy making way for Kelly and Frawley) shortly after that Galway near miss and the momentum began to flow back in Wexford's favour. Within five minutes of coming on Kelly almost headed in a Molloy cross but the striker did convert what proved to be the winner in a carbon copy move in the 85th minute. This time it was Frawley the creator with a low cross in from the touchline and Kelly blasted a close range left foot shot to the back of the net to put Wexford through to the last four.

Back to the League next week, Youths heading to the Bowl to take on DLR Waves on Saturday evening.
