Wexford Youths Women U17s continued their fine early season form as they secured another three points against visitors from the Garden County in Ferrycarrig Park this afternoon.   However, it was a sterling performance by their opponents, Bray Wanderers, in their first ever match at this level and Wexford were made to fight all the way to ensure that they remained in front at the final whistle.   It was frantic action from the very start as Wexford put early pressure on Danielle Batt in the Bray goal from a corner.   Bray’s Molly Crowe then shot over when well-placed and Wexford’s skipper, Seren Ward, had a good run and shot but it proved to be an easy grab for Batt in the Bray goal.   The first Wexford goal came on six minutes when Katie Law rounded the Bray keeper and her low left-footed shot crossed the goal-line despite the best efforts of the final Bray defender.

Katie Law’s opening goal for Wexford was followed by further attempts on the Bray goal from Wexford frees taken by Freya De Mange and Katie herself, but it wasn’t all one-way traffic as Bray forced Lauren Brennan in the Wexford goal to come out and make a brave save, and then the rebound was put just wide of the Wexford goal-post by a Bray forward.  Bray then came close to opening their account once again as Aoife Mohan hit the Wexford crossbar with a speculative effort with 25 minutes gone. Bray were next forced to make an early substitution as Ella Moriarty came on in place of Eva Freine.  Wexford increased their lead just after the half-hour mark when the Bray defence hesitated while waiting for an offside flag that never came, and Katie Law took the opportunity to volley home from close range to make it 2-0 for Wexford.

Wexford stretched their lead to 3-0 on 38 minutes when Siun Murdiff finished with aplomb from a good distance out and, just before the break, Karolina Jaglarz warmed the hands of Danielle Batt in the Bray goal with a stinging effort and Wexford’s Kate McDonald had a free which Batt was forced to push over her own crossbar for a corner.   3-0 to Wexford at half-time.   Bray introduced Faye Evans and Ava McKechnie at half-time and were rewarded immediately with a wonderful solo goal by Ava Treacy who ran through the heart of the Wexford defence and finished confidently past Lauren Brennan to make it 3-1.  It nearly got even better for Bray a few minutes later as McKechnie’s low effort hit the inside of one Wexford post and nearly hit the other post but just managed to stay out.

However, Karolina Jaglarz managed to make the game safe for Wexford about the hour mark as her shot from distance found Batt a good way off her goal-line and make it 4-1 for the home side.  Wexford manager, Alan Browne, then took the opportunity to make a number of substitutions which included an impressive cameo from Rita Redmond and the match drifted without much incident thereafter to the final whistle other than a decent effort on goal by Bray’s Ava Treacy and a brave double-save by Bray’s star on the day, Danielle Batt, from the ever-dangerous Katie Law of Wexford.   So, 4-1 to the home side at full-time but Bray will undoubtedly feel that they have plenty to build on after a very decent first performance at this level.
