Wexford make the long-anticipated return to action this Friday night away to Athlone Town.

Wexford have been boosted by the signing of Jack Doherty, with the possibility of even more signings to follow in the coming days.  Jack Doherty joins a hugely capable attack including Kaleem Simon, Janabi Amour Jr., Charlie Smith and Conor English.

Like all clubs, Wexford have effectively had to hold a second pre-season, with the standout result being a 1-0 victory away to Cork City.  Speaking to the media team during the week, Brian O'Sullivan was eager to get his team back into action:

"The mood is very positive, the players have been working really hard on and off the pitch and are buzzing to get going.  We have a great week and everyone is focused on their jobs in the game.  We are approaching it as a must-win game as it is important to hit the ground running."

"I think Athlone will be very fit and organized, they have some really good players who will cause us problems so we need to defend properly.  I think they are similar to us, they will look to get off to a good start.  They have had a really good pre-season and got some good results against good opposition, so they will be confident.  Adrian Carberry has them well drilled so we are expecting a tough game.

When asked if he was pleased to have Athlone up first, O'Sullivan was just glad to be back in league action:

"I'm happy to be back and it didn't matter who we played as we probably didn't see this happening a few months back.  The FAI and particularly Niall Quinn and Gary Owens have done well to get League of Ireland football back up and running.    Who we played is irrelevant as we will prepare for this like any other game"

In fitness news, Brian O'Sullivan has an almost completely fit squad to choose from, including new signing Jack Doherty who took full part in training.  Malike Hill-Benrouguibi and Karl Manahan are also fully fit having both missed games during the initial season re-start.  Liam Berry will be out for 1-2 weeks due an injury sustained in training, and Goalkeeper Colum Feeney will also be out.  Sean Roche and Lee Costello are both unavailable for the fixture.

Kickoff in Athlone Town Stadium is set for 19:45 and is taking place behind closed doors.  Unfortunately we are unable to live-stream away league matches this year, however we will have extended match highlights for you following the game.  Details of our home match live streams are on the way shortly.
