Match Preview: Sligo Rovers vs. Wexford FC (FAI Cup)
Â
Wexford travel to The Showgrounds this Sunday to face a high-flying Sligo Rovers side, in the first round of the 2022 Extra.ie FAI Cup.
Â
Wexford’s 7 game unbeaten streak came to an end last week as they fell short in a 1-0 loss to Cork. However, they have been amongst the top performing sides in the First Division in the last 8 games, scoring 15 points.Â
Â
Last week’s loss against league leaders Cork, who have still only lost 1 game this season, leaves Wexford in the 6th place and 3 points outside the promotion places behind Treaty United.
Â
Wexford had an impressive cup run last year, reaching the quarter finals and ultimately losing 3-0 against St. Pats. Wexford defeated Cabinteely 3-0 in the first round, and came out 2-0 winners against Killester United in the second round. They will look to have another cup run this year, especially as the league performances have improved compared to last year.
Â
Sligo Rovers on the other hand will most likely be fired up for this one. They were knocked out by Cork City 3-2 in the first round last year – a late goal by Dale Holland as the difference. Earlier tonight they came out 2-0 up in the home leg against Scottish outfit "Motherwell" in the Europa Conference League qualification, winning 3-0 on aggregate.Â
Â
In the Premier Division, they currently sit in 4th place, and are on a good run of form, like Wexford. In the last 6 games, they have only lost once – winning 3 and drawing 2.
Â
In 2016, Sligo were knocked out of the FAI Cup by Wexford in the third round, losing 2-1 at Ferrycarrig Park. A late goal by Andy Mulligan secured the win for Wexford, as well as an early goal from Shane Dempsey.
Â
Despite this, the 3 league games between Sligo and Wexford in 2016 resulted in 3 convincing wins for Sligo, two 5-0 results and 4-1.
Â
Sligo will want to come back and get redemption after 6 years. On the other hand, will they be fatigued after their big-week European encounter. An exciting match awaits.
