A 2nd vs 3rd showdown awaits this weekend as the Youths face another important top of the table clash against Athlone. 

The Youths come into this game after a tightly-fought 3-3 draw against Peamount United. Shelbourne now lead at the top by 7 points. Shelbourne face 9th place Cork City this weekend, so a win is vital for the Youths to maintain their title chances.

Athlone extended their win-streak to 6 games after a convincing 4-1 win over Treaty last week, and are now the league’s most on-form side. In the last 6 games, Athlone rank 1st for goals scored (17), and also ranked 2nd for goals conceded (2).

Athlone also come into this game with the league’s best away record, and are the only side to remain unbeaten away from home. Wexford on the other hand have only lost 1 game at home this season.

The Youths have beaten Athlone in their previous 6 meetings. Their last match was on the opening day of the season and finished 2-1.  Wexford defeated Athlone 7-1 at home in the league last season. However, with Athlone’s impressive defensive record this season, a much tighter game seems to be the case.

The Athlone defence will have a tough time keeping Ellen Molloy quiet, as she has scored 9 goals in 11 games this season. Likewise for the Wexford defenders, Emily Corbett for Athlone has been on superb form, scoring 8 goals in the last 4 games.
