2020 top scorer Karl Fitzsimons returns for new season
Another key squad member returns for the 2021 with the confirmation that Karl Fitzsimons will return for next season.
Karl Fitzsimons was near ever-present for Wexford FC in 2020, playing pretty much everywhere but between the sticks. He pitched in at full back, played alongside Crowley at centre-mid, and ran the attack with Doherty up front. Incredibly, he looked right at home in every position, and even managed to snag the season top-goalscorer record
Born in Dublin, Fitzsimons signed for Drogheda United U19s in 2017. The following season he joined up with Stephen Kenny's Dundalk side and made a couple of Cup appearances for the senior side as well as playing with their U19s. Karl signed for Longford Town for the 2019 season but didn't get as much game time there as he would have liked. He made the move down to Wexford for 2020, where he enjoyed a highly successful first full season.
Speaking to the club media team, Fitzsimons praised his team-mates' spirit in what was a difficult year:
"One of the best things about last was that even when results didn't go our way, the lads always fought til the end. It was always 100% win, lose or draw."
Like many of his team-mates this year, he was disappointed not to have had more games in front of the Wexford public:
"I only got to play 2 or 3 matches in front of a stadium with more than the restricted number of fans, and no matter what some might say they definitely make a difference. Next season, I hope collectively to finish the season with a lot more points on the board and as a person goal, to add more goals and assists to my name. Personally I want to develop more as a senior player"
