Wexford FC suffered a fifth home defeat of the season on Friday night, Drogheda United with a narrow 2-1 victory at Ferrycarrig Park. Danny Furlong scored his fifth goal of the season putting the home team in front after 15 minutes, rounding the keeper for an easy finish after a lovely through ball from Jack Doherty.

The visitors responded and started to exert pressure on the Wexford defence after what had been a quiet opening 20 minutes from them. Corey Chambers saved well from Gallagher from a United corner before the visitors drew level in the 28th minute, Luke McNally finishing from close range after getting on the end of a free kick from the wing. Three minutes later and Drogheda were in front, Jake Hyland with a left foot finish into the corner from outside the box. 2-1 to United at the break.

The second half saw few chances for either side, Drogheda content with defending their lead, Adeyemo had their only real effort on target with a weak left foot shot in the 65th minute. Wexford found it difficult to find any clear cut openings also despite having most of the possession in the second 45 but still had two great opportunities to draw level just before the end, first Chris Kenny shooting over after Drogheda failed to clear their lines before Danny Furlong blasted another right foot shot over the crossbar from close range right before the final whistle.

Wexford stay bottom three points adrift of 9th placed Athlone Town while Drogheda climb to 3rd. Next up, an away trip to the City Calling Stadium on Saturday evening to take on 2nd placed Longford Town.
