Wexford FC RT @YouthsWomen: ⚽️ @bkingslxy hat-trick from @YouthsWomen U17s win over @LimerickFCWomen at Ferrycarrig on Saturday!🎩⚽️💗 https://t.co/C9wU…

Danny Furlong scored his 100th League of Ireland goal in Friday nights richly deserved 2-0 win over Athlone Town at Ferrycarrig Park, the Rosslare man tapping in Danny Doyles cross from close range after 27 minutes. Storm Hannah caused havoc both on and off the field (the stand had to be evacuated as a precaution), particularly in the first half when both teams struggled with the conditions.

The goal seemed to settle the home side though and there really was only one side in it from then on, Athlone rarely testing Corey Chambers in goal. As the second half wore on Wexford looked more and more dangerous, creating numerous chances with Furlong, Jack Doherty and Emmet Nugent linking up superbly.

The second goal arrived just on the hour mark, Jack Doherty blasting in his fourth goal of the season, Doyle again with the assist. Doherty had further opportunities to add to his tally only to be denied by a goal line clearance and Myles in the Town goal. Nugent was also unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet, especially at the end when he had a shot blocked in the box before lifting the ball over the crossbar from the rebound.

The result lifted Wexford off the bottom of the table above Galway United who we face next week in Eamonn Deacy Park.

Wexford FC: Corey Chambers, Paddy Cahill, Sean Callan, Chris Kenny (c), Darragh O'Connor, Ryan Nolan, Thomas Croke, Danny Doyle, Emmet Nugent, Jack Doherty and Danny Furlong. Subs: Jason McGuire, Sean Roche, Andrew Farrell, Nika Arevadze and Torik Adegoke.
