Wexford FC RT @billy_molloy: Good luck to everyone getting leaving cert results today. If you get what you expected fair play. If you don’t it’s no pr…

Wexford FC produced one of their best performances all year on Friday night, sharing the spoils with high flying Drogheda United. All the more impressive was the fact that they did so with just ten men for most of the second half and finishing up with one of the youngest teams ever fielded at Ferrycarrig.

There were three changes to the side that started in Longford, Mark Slater, new signing Dean Walsh and Owen McCormack returning from suspension to captain the seniors for the first time. On the bench, plenty of youth, 16 year old Kyle Scallan who made his senior debut coming on in the second half and 17 year old Sean Smithers, also making his senior home debut with a sub appearance. Add to that 17 year old Adham Masood who started plus our captain this evening just been 20 years of age, Dean George (20) and Conor Sutton (21) Liam McCartan (21) and Mark Slater (22) etc. the future certainly looks bright.

Drogheda arrived second in the table and looking for a repeat of the heavy beating we endured in our first meeting earlier this year but it was clear from the get go that this was to be a much more even affair. Wexford edged the first half of an entertaining open game having the better chances through Slater, George and a stunning long range effort from Walsh.

With 35 to go, a turning point as Sean Kelly left a foot out and received his second yellow of the game, the home team down to 10. It seemed like only a matter of time before Drogs made their advantage count, but it never materialised. Dogged defending from the entire team while also still offering a threat on the counter (Walsh again coming close after rounding the keeper) a point was the least Wexford deserved at the final whistle.
