John Morgan scored his first goal for Wexford FC on Friday night against Athlone Town which also proved to be the winner as we returned from a scorching Lissywollen venue with three points.

Damian Locke named two changes from the side that drew against Galway United at Ferrycarrig with Aaron Dobbs and Mikey Byrne in place of Aaron O'Connor and Thomas Croke. In the searing heat the game was stopped twice for much needed water breaks while the players had to also battle a difficult surface on the night.

Wexford started off well with Dean George proving a handful for the Athlone defenders down the left flank and he provided Aaron Dobbs with a wonderful chance to open the scoring on 15 mins with a mazy run beating three players and putting in a fine cross but Dobbs volleyed over. Danny Doyle was next to come close with a left foot shot that the keeper parried away before John Morgan gave Wexford a deserved lead in the 32nd minute. Aaron Dobbs was fouled on the edge of the box, Morgan stepped up and curled a left foot shot around the wall and in off the post for what proved to be the only goal of the game.

The second half saw great chances for Dobbs and Dean Kelly to extend the lead but saw their efforts blocked and tipped away by the busy Athlone keeper. Dean George had a fantastic effort from halfway that went narrowly wide when Lawless raced off his line to prevent Dobbs latching onto a long ball over the top leaving the net empty. George again forced a good save from the keeper after skipping past an Athlone defender before unleashing a left foot shot with ten to go.

Athlone battled gamely to get the equaliser but Corey Chambers had just mainly crosses to collect and saw a fair few long range efforts from the midlanders sail over his crossbar. Another solid defensive performance with the only real danger right at the death when Sean Kelly had an excellent block to deny the Town.
