It was a night of firsts at Ferrycarrig Park on Friday night. First home victory of the 2018 season, first hat-trick scored by a Wexford FC player, first goals for Shane Barnes, first goals for Dean George at senior level, plus of course a record breaking seven goals! Nights like these don't (if ever!) happen too often. The first 45 saw plenty of chances which hinted at a comfortable if not spectacular victory for Wexford. Aaron Dobbs blasted in the opening goal five minutes before the break after some excellent work by Liam McCartan at right back. Ten minutes into the second and Shane Barnes opened his account after Dobbs harried a Town player off the ball and crossed to the unmarked Barnes. After that, the floodgates opened as Athlone fell apart. Barnes ended up with three, Dobbs added another from the penalty spot and as Barnes was subbed to terrific applause from the home crowd, his replacement Dean George marched on and grabbed two for himself. Frankly, it could have been even worse for Athlone and a double figures scoreline. But seven will do.
