Wexford FC All over here at the RSC, thanks to our hosts this afternoon & all the best for the season ahead. FT… https://t.co/s2lVMx8Qwa

An outstanding overhead kick from Georgie Kelly and a header from Jason McClelland in the second half of this tie were enough to earn UCD all three points and move them up to second in the table.

The game started brightly for Wexford. Within the first 3 minutes, Conor Sutton who had come in to the team for the suspended Craig McCabe, found himself in posession of the ball out wide on the right hand side. After he had knocked it past Scales, his cross was only half cleared as far as Eoin Porter who unleashed a thunderous shot from the edge of the area that was only inches over the bar. As the half continued, UCD grew more in to the game. After a series of corners for the Students around the 18th minute, Daire O'Connor hit a rasping shot from a full 20 yards out only to see the agile Corey Chambers fly to his right to tip the ball away for a corner.

The best chance for Wexford in the first half came from the head of Owen McCormack. Five minutes before the break, a Wexford corner was worked short between Slater and Hanlon. The cross was deep towards the back post where McCormack had made his run, but his header was gathered by Nial Corbet in the UCD goal.

Within minutes of the second half starting, Wexford were again on the attack. The lively Danny Doyle broke down the right hand side, and as he approached the byline, turned towards goal. His ball across goal looking for Mark Slater was cut out, and UCD survived another scare.

Shortly after the hour mark, it was UCD who made the breakthrough. Captain Gary O'Neill found himself in posession on the right hand side. His cross was ever so slightly behind the onrushing Kelly, but his improvisation was superb as he dropped his left shoulder and rotated through the air. The bicycle kick nestling in the bottom left of the goal with Corey Chambers rooted to the spot.

In the 75th minute, three corners in quick succession were awarded to the visitors as they tried to mount a comeback. The third one fell awkwardly to Ricky Fox in the UCD area, but he could only turn his shot wide for a goal kick. It was that goal kick that led to the second of the night for the Students. Daire O'Connor who found himself in posession of the football on the right hand side of the pitch, and his cross was met by the head of McClelland who's header arrowed towards the top corner of the goal, and out of the reach of Chambers.
