Wexford FC picked up their third point of the season on Friday night in Ferrycarrig Park against fellow strugglers Longford Town.

The first half was a dull afair, with neither goalkeeper having much to do. However, with Don Cowan in the team, Longford had a player who could make something from nothing, and he was a constant threat down the Longford right hand side. On a number of occasions he managed to skip away from Sean Hurley, but fortunately for the home side, his final delivery in to the box was not good enough.

There was a half chance for either side just before the break though. First up a long ball from Craig Wall was flicked on by Craig Hayes to Adam Hanlon. Hanlon's touch was heavy though, and Skinner was able to collect. Then just minutes later, Cowan again beat Hurley and this time his cross was better, but O'Sullivan couldn't make the most of it, and his header went over.

It was a surprise when Longford appeared for the second half without the impressive Cowan and O'Sullivan (replaced by Jake Kelly and Dylan McGlade), as this combination had looked the most likely to yield dividends for the visitors. The quality of the whole game was improved however after the break. Within minutes Shane Dunne played a great ball over the top looking for Hayes, but it was just too heavy and Skinner was able to claim. Then Adam Hanlon picked the ball up in a midfield position and drove at the heart of the Longford defence only to see his left-footed shot dragged wide.

It was end to end at this stage. Dylan McGlade then played in Enda Curran, but luckily for Wexford, Curran had left his shooting boots in the Midlands and the shot went over. The next spell of play for Longford started with a freek kick half way inside the Wexford half. From the right, Mulhall crossed with his left inswinging towards goal, and just for a moment it looked like Chambers may have got caught underneath it, but he managed to tip the ball away for a corner. Jake Kelly took the resulting corner, but O'Reilly's header went just over the bar.

The best chance of the game presented itself to Longford with 15 minutes left on the clock. Cody Mulhall found himself in a shooting position just to the left of goal. His effort was palmed away by Chambers, but fell to Enda Curran. As Chambers got to his feet and started to close down the Longford forward, Curran's powerful shot hit the crossbar and bounced away. Some in the crowd thought Curran hit the back of the net, and the ball bounced out, including some of the Longford players, but the officials had a good view, and nothing was given.

So after an even game, the teams returned to the changing rooms with a point-a-piece, which leaves the gap between them at three points.
