Wexford Youths booked their place in the Continental Tyres FAI Women’s Senior Cup final in the Aviva Stadium with yet another outstanding victory this time at the expense of a competent Peamount side in Ferrycarrig Park last weekend.

Saturday’s win adds another to an already extensive list of exquisite Youths performances of late.

The travelling side would have been happier after the opening ten minutes however. They limited Youths to only one half chance and their tactic of playing three strikers to force their opponents to play long was working a treat.

But, Peamount’s positive opening was in ruins with two quick fire Wexford strikes in the twelfth and fourteenth minutes.

From an Emma Hansbery free, Claire O’Riordan capitalised on some poor defending to open the scoring. Goalscorer then turned provider moments later as she rounded Michelle Watson in the Dublin goal before unselfishly pulling a pass back for Aisling Frawley to fire into an empty net.

The Wexford side then went on the offensive as they looked to kill the game off early on. Captain Kylie Murphy had a shot well saved and the unplayable O’Riordan volleyed narrowly wide.

Carol Breen thought she had found a third goal in the twenty seventh minute. Breen reacted quickest to Murphy’s volley which had cannoned off the bar only to see linesman Jimmy O’Neill raise his offside flag.

Youths didn’t have to wait much longer for their third though, Watson fumbled Ciara Rossiter’s through ball into the path of Breen who worked it over to O’Riordan. She made no mistake in slotting home.

The Dublin side had a chance of their own the just before the half time whistle as Danielle Murphy’s header was stopped only by the crossbar.

Peamount were offered a glimmer of hope just after half time. Amber Barrett raced down the wing and pulled a pass back to Emma Wall who finished well past Mary Rose Kelly.

But just as quickly as the door was opened for United it was slammed shut again by Wexford Youths. Emma Hansbery put the game out of reach in the fifty fifth minute with a stunning free kick over the wall and into the left top corner, skimming the post as it flew in.

The home side continued the demolition job with a fifth in the final quarter. Breen pounced on a miss hit shot from teammate O’Riordan and buried her finish into the top of the net.

Three minutes later, the net bulged again. O’Riordan completed a thoroughly deserved hat-trick when she got on the end of some good work by Breen.

There were more opportunities to increase the scoreline late on, most notably through Rossiter’s strike from the edge of the penalty area thumped the woodwork.

An intelligent Lucy McCarton lob in injury time added a consolation for Peamount.
