First defeat of the season for Wexford Youths Women last night as title rivals Peamount United grabbed all three points to move joint second with Youths on nine points having played one game less (Youths have played four). Shelbourne top the League, same points with three played but leading on a much superior goal difference.

There were two changes to the team that defeated Galway WFC in Carlow last week, Lauren Dwyer and McKenna Davidson starting in place of Jenny Clifford and Katrina Parrock.

Like previous games between the two sides, this was a tough tense encounter, Peamount edging possession in a first half of few clear cut chances, Amber Barrett with a right foot shot early on the only real save Sophie Lenehan had to make. The hosts were quick to close down Rianna Jarrett throughout a fast physical opening 45, most of Wexford's attacks coming down the left flank through Doireann Fahey. Jarrett did break free of her markers late on but could only find the side netting with a left foot shot as the first half ended scoreless.

The second half continued in much the same fashion, Youths relatively comfortable without really creating much upfront. That comfort vanished though in the 58th minute when Eleanor Ryan Doyle found the net with a well struck right foot shot from distance to put the hosts in front. Ten minutes later and the same player struck again, Barrett forcing Lenehan into a mistake leaving Doyle with an easy tap in to make it 2-0.

Kylie Murphy put Wexford back in it with 20 minutes to go, slotting home from close range after United failed to deal with a Lauren Dwyer free kick. It was all set up for a grandstand finish but it never really happened, Peamount defended their lead superbly, a rushed shot from Jarrett the only real danger they had to face before the final whistle sounded and Youths unbeaten run to the new season had ended.
