Wexford FC RT @YouthsWomen: ⚽️ Goal number two for @RiannaJarrett from tonight’s 2-1 @YouthsWomen win over @CorkCityFCWomen at Ferrycarrig Park, assis…

A Rianna Jarrett goal after 70 minutes was enough to earn Wexford Youths Women a huge victory over their great rivals Shelbourne LFC last night at Ferrycarrig. Youths are now six points clear of Shels with just three League games remaining (away to Galway and U.C.D with a home game vs Cork sandwiched between). The scoreline doesn't reflect how dominant the home side were, a brief spell of pressure from the visitors just after Jarrett scored her 29th goal of the season, the best the visitors could muster in the 90 minutes.

There was just the one change to the line up that beat Peamount United three days previously, Emma Hansberry replacing Orla Casey in midfield. A strong start by Youths had the Dublin side on the backfoot although there weren't too many clear cut chances created in the opening 45 mins (Edel Kennedys left foot shot the only time McQuillan was forced to make a save). Shelbourne found it hard to find any space and get their creative players into the game, from front to back Wexford pressured and harried and won back possession high up the pitch although their final pass let them down on occasion to get the opening goal they deserved.

They had to wait till 20 minutes before the end for that, Emma Hansberry with another perfect delivery from a corner, curling right in on top of the keeper who was under severe pressure from Jarrett and Kylie Murphy right on the goaline. Jarrett scrambled the ball over, not her prettiest finish of the year but possibly the most important, and Youths were on the way to a massive three points. In fact Jarrett could have doubled it late on, McQuillan with a super save low to her right. Sophie Lenehan did extremely well to hang onto a shot that came through a pile of bodies as Shelbourne tried in vain for an equaliser but it would have been a travesty had they done. Youths outperforming them in every area of the pitch, and now just four points away from their fourth League title.
