Wexford FC Big week ahead! On Saturday @WexfordFC U17s take on Athlone in the Shield semi-final. On Sunday our U15s face Sligo… https://t.co/DfwmIwdDxA

Goals from Rianna Jarrett, Claire O'Riordan and Katrina Parrock, together with a superb defensive performance saw Wexford Youths Women beat their great rivals Shelbourne LFC at the AUL Complex in Dublin on Saturday. The win meant Wexford topped the League for the very first time this year, at least for a day till Peamount United retained the lead the next day with their win against U.C.D Waves but Youths have played one game less.

There was only one change to the side that beat Waves a week earlier with Orla Casey starting in place of Becky Conroy. Shelbourne had been scoring for fun so far this year with Leanne Kiernan already netting 10 times alone, but she barely got a look in from a defence that was patient and well organised from the start. Wexford didn't just sit back though, Claire O'Riordan had two excellent chances before Rianna Jarrett struck superbly on 34 mins to give Youths a much deserved lead.

The second half followed a similar pattern, Shelbourne unable to find space while Wexford threatened with each attack, Lauren Dwyer coming closest when her shot hit the crossbar. O'Riordan doubled the lead on the hour mark with a superb header from an Aisling Frawley corner. Shelbourne did get one back on the 77th minute when Pearl Slattery headed in from close range but the big push from the Dublin side to equalise never really came as Youths were relatively comfortable before Frawley intercepted a pass and raced up the wing, passed calmly to Katrina Parrock (who had just come on) who fired it past McQuillan to kill the game in emphatic fashion.

Wexford Youths Women : Sophie Lenehan, Nicola Sinnott, Lauren Dwyer, Orlaith Conlon, Becky Cassin, Edel Kennedy (Amy Walsh 94), Kylie Murphy (c), Aisling Frawley, Claire O'Riordan, Rianna Jarrett (Katrina Parrock 92) and Orla Casey (Becky Conroy 84)  Subs Not Used: Rachel Hutchinson, Ciara Delaney and Clionagh Ni Shi.
