Wexford Youths Women kicked off their 2017 season with a difficult home tie with Galway WFC on Saturday night.  Both sides were beginning their season with new managers, with Laura Heffernan returning to the Wexford Youths Women’s dugout, while Galway welcomed new manager Billy Clery to the club.

Indeed Galway started the stronger with an intense opening ten minute salvo.  Galway wingers Lisa Casserly and Tessa Mullins were instrumental early on and peppered the Wexford goal with shots, just failing to hit the target.

The first shot on target went Wexford’s way on 18 minutes, somewhat against the run of play.  A Linda Douglas cross from the right was headed straight to Emma Hansberry coming off the left wing, striking it well but it was met by Galway keeper Tina Hughes.

Wexford continued to grow into the high tempo game, and forced a second good chance around the 30 minute mark.  Kylie Murphy had a superb game playing just behind striker Claire O’Riordan, and their link up play was a feature throughout the game.  On this occasion it was again a ball in from the right, chested down by Murphy which set up O’Riordan for the shot, dragged just wide on this occasion.

Shortly afterwards it was Galway’s turn to threaten once again.  A Maebh de Búrca freekick in a dangerous position was sent just high and wide, before a Lynsey McKey cross was headed back across goal, but a fantastic last-ditch tackle by Nicola Sinnott kept Wexford on level terms.

Chances were scarce for the remainder of the first half, but Wexford put a decent passing move together but Claire O'Riordan could only find Hughes in the Galway goal with her chip from close in. The sides were even at 0-0 going into the break after a tough opening half.

Wexford started the second half in resurgent mood, and looked to improve on their first half performance.  Heffernan made her first substitution on 55 minutes with the introduction of Aisling Frawley in place of Aoibhinn Webb, and the additional pace on the right wing would be the key to unlocking the Galway side.

Hansberry also started to make inroads down the left wing for Wexford and Tina Hughes in the Galway goal just managed to push away a wicked cross by the Sligo native for a corner.  From the resulting corner, Hansberry's perfect delivery was met with a bullet header by Claire O'Riordan, and Wexford finally had their lead.

Frawley continued to cause havoc down the right side, and with 15 minutes to go Frawley cut inside her marker and smashed a left-foot shot off the crossbar and away. Three minutes later, Frawley's cross from the right was allowed drift all the way to the left wing by the Galway defence, and Hansberry was in position to blast the ball home for 2-0 for Wexford, and a hard-fought victory was secured.  Final score in Ferrycarrig Park, Wexford Youths Women 2 - 0 Galway WFC.
