Wexford FC RT @YouthsWomen: ⚽️ Goal number two for @RiannaJarrett from tonight’s 2-1 @YouthsWomen win over @CorkCityFCWomen at Ferrycarrig Park, assis…

Wexford FC welcome Galway United to Ferrycarrig Park on Friday night in our first home game of the season, both sides suffering defeats in their opening fixtures of the 2019 First Division League campaign last weekend.

Wexford were beaten in Athlone despite a promising start and taking an early lead through Emmet Nugent the game turned after Danny Furlong was harshly sent off after just 9 minutes. Jack Doherty was also on the scoresheet for Wexford for the first time that night but the midlanders ran out 4-2 winners.

Galway also had a tough opening defeat, 2-1 up against this years First Division title favourites Shelbourne going into the last 10 minutes of the game but the Reds fought back for a 3-2 win with two very late goals at Eamonn Deacy Park.

Both teams have new Managers at the helm for 2019 (Wexford's Brian O'Sullivan and Galway's Alan Murphy) who have assembled squads with a focus on young promising talent and a small mix of players with League of Ireland experience.

Conor Barry (United's top scorer last year with 10 goals from midfield) and Colin Kelly (17 year old striker scored the opener vs Shelbourne last week) are certainly two young players for Galway to watch out for tomorrow night at Ferrycarrig Park. The more experienced 31 year old striker Vinny Faherty who returned to United for a third time this year from Cypriot side PAEEK was also on the scoresheet in last weeks defeat is another.

Galway will be looking for improvement after a difficult season in 2018. After been relegated from the Premier Divison the previous year, they were many peoples favourites to go straight back up but it proved to be a challenging season. Galway parted company with Manager Shane Keegan (formerly with Wexford Youths) in June and appointed Murphy as Player/Manager. By seasons end, the Tribesmen were 6th with 37 points (Wexford were 9th with 17 points) and Murphy was appointed Manager on a permanent basis for the 2019 season.

Wexford had just the one home tie against Galway at Ferrycarrig last year which ended scoreless back in June, the two other fixtures ending in a 4-1 home win for Galway in April (Aaron Dobbs with Wexford's goal) and a 1-1 draw at Eamonn Deacy Park in our final away match last September (Dean George our scorer).

After last weeks defeat in Athlone, Wexford FC's Jack Doherty is looking to make things right in front of the home crowd tomorrow night:

"It was a tough defeat to take last week, they just caught us in the end with the extra man. I don't think the referee even saw the players coming together, he seemed to react to the crowd. There was very little in it so I was surprised to see a straight red card for Danny, I was expecting a yellow for both players if anything."

For Jack it was his first 90 minutes in a Wexford shirt after coming back from pre-season injury:

"I only played 20 minutes up in St.Pat's and then Athlone was the first 90 for me. Then with the ten men there was even more running to do, but I enjoyed it, it was great getting back out and I didn't feel anything either after so it was good. Looking forward to Galway now, Danny will be out but it will be an opportunity for someone else to come in and stake a claim in the team. I've played before in Ferrycarrig when I was with Waterford playing against Wexford Youths and it's a good wide pitch, plenty of space to create chances and good for forwards. Hopefully we can get good support on the night and get the three points, that's our aim anyhow."

Brian O'Sullivan on last weeks loss in Athlone:

"We got off to a great start when Emmet scored a good goal, however the game changed for us when we feel Danny was wrongfully sent off. It was always going to be an uphill battle after that. When we went 2-1 down we showed good character to get it back to 2-2 but I suppose the second half with the extra man it showed particularly in midfield, they had the majority of possession. I felt if we defended the corner (for the 3rd goal) better and hung in for longer we could have got a result with a bit of luck on the night. The fourth goal came from an individual error and completely killed us altogether."

Brian is looking for a reaction from his players tomorrow night against Galway:

"We will be looking for better defending from every player all over the pitch and need to make ourselves harder to beat. Even with ten men conceding four goals is not good enough. Hopefully tomorrow we can show the fans what we are about. Hopefully we can show energy, passion and a bit of desire with a good performance. It would be great to see the fans making it difficult for opposition at home games and be that twelfth man for us. We will be missing Danny through suspension tomorrow and Hopper is out for 2-3 weeks so it's time for lads to step up and make a claim for a starting position."
