Wexford FC Wexford FC U17 trials for 2019! Trials to take place late December & early January - please contact bmolloy@wexford… https://t.co/OUKEocsz7T

Just three home games to go for Wexford FC this season, the first of which sees play off chasing Shelbourne FC visit Ferrycarrig for the second time this year on Friday evening. They came away with all three points on their last visit to the South East back in March, Aaron Molloy with the only goal of the game although Owen Wall almost grabbed an equalizer right at the death for us, his curling shot just inches from finding the corner of the net.

It was a lot more comfortable for the Reds the last time the sides met in the league, a 4-1 win for them at Tolka Park in June, Dean Kelly with the Wexford goal that night. Shelbourne currently sit in 3rd place, nine points off leaders U.C.D with four games left meaning a play off position fight with Finn Harps and Drogheda United is the only real viable path left for the Dublin side to get back into the Premier Division for the first time since 2013 (Shelbourne have 13 League and 7 FAI Cup titles to their name since been formed in 1885).

Wexford FC had a decent record against them in our first season last year, 2 wins and 2 losses (1 in the Leinster Senior Cup) but by seasons end Shelbourne were 4th in the 8 team First Division on 40 points with Wexford ending up 7th, 21 points adrift of them. This year theres a 29 point gap between the sides before they meet on Friday.

Both sides had contrasting fortunes last weekend in the First Round of the FAI Cup, Shelbourne progressing to the next round after a 4-0 win at home to Athlone Town while Wexford bowed out after a heavy 7-0 home defeat to Bohemians. The last round of League games saw the Reds beat Cobh Ramblers 3-1 (also at Tolka Park) while Wexford lost to Finn Harps 3-0 up in Ballybofey.

As well as having the First Divisions top scorer in David O'Sullivan (14 goals) they also have the best defensive record in the League, conceding just 17 goals in their 23 games so far. Owen Heary in his first season as Manager has also strengthened his squad recently (new signing from Bohemians Karl Moore scoring a recent hat-trick against Longford Town) and knows his side can't afford to slip up at Ferrycarrig with 2nd placed Finn Harps travelling to Athlone tomorrow night for an expected three points.

Although Wexford have gone four League games now without a win our recent performance at Ferrycarrig against another play off candidate Drogheda United will give us hope of a positive outcome, the team performance excellent on the night, even when down to 10 men after Sean Kellys dismissal Wexford pushed forward for a winner before the game ended scoreless. Goals have been hard to come by of late though, five games have now passed since we last scored (Mark Slater and Dean Kelly on target vs Cabinteely at the start of July). The only positive that came out of last Fridays exit from the FAI Cup was the return to action of our top scorer Aaron Dobbs who came on as a second half substitute after missing the last five games through injury. Fans are really looking forward to seeing exciting new signing Dean Walsh and Dobbs possibly playing together for the first time upfront on Friday if chosen.

Wexford almost have a full squad to choose from tomorrow night, John Morgan available for selection after his recent suspension while Ryan Nolan is the only real doubt for the game after picking up a groin injury in training this week.

Kick off at Ferrycarrig Park is set for 8pm.
